Richard S. (Rick) Yearwood, 55, of Blacksburg, Va., passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, September 14, 2010, from complications due to diabetes. He was born on May 26, 1955, in San Antonio, Texas, grew up in Blacksburg, and graduated from BHS in 1973. Rick worked as a cook for many years in dining services at Virginia Tech. He enjoyed fishing when he was able, reading, and listening to music. Rick is survived by his mother, Betty L. Yearwood, of Blacksburg; his father, Richard M. Yearwood, of Blacksburg; his brother, Guille R. Yearwood and his wife, Patrice, of Christiansburg; his sister, Susan Y. Harrison and her partner, Phyllis Spiegel, of Christiansburg; his nephew, Reed Yearwood; his nieces, Emory Yearwood, Avery Harrison, and Katherine Harrison; a dear friend, David Marshall; and his beloved dog, Georgie. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the wonderful care that Rick received from Dr. Michael Payne, Dr. Allan Sklar, the nurses and staff at Kroontje Health Care Center, and the nurses and staff at the dialysis center in Blacksburg. Despite his many health issues, Rick never uttered a complaint. He fought the good fight to the end and was a shining example of courage in the face of adversity. A celebration of Rick’s life will be held 4 p.m. on Friday, September 17, 2010, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on East Main Street in Christiansburg. Following the service, the family will receive friends at the Yearwood home on East Main Street in Christiansburg.
