Richard M. Yearwood, 78, of Christiansburg, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2013. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard S. Yearwood; his second wife, Betty S. Thomas; his brother, Jerry Yearwood; and his parents, Cecil and Margery Yearwood. He is survived by his son, Guille Yearwood and his wife, Patrice; his daughter, Susan Harrison; and his grandchildren, Reed and Emory Yearwood, and Avery and Katherine Harrison. He is also survived by his first wife, Betty L. Yearwood. Richard was born in Knoxville on March 28, 1934. He graduated from Fulton High School in 1952, and attended Gardner-Webb College. He served in the army for two years, then completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the University of Tennessee. Richard then earned his Ph.D. at the University of Florida. After working as the Regional Director of Planning for the city of Asheville, he joined the faculty at Virginia Tech in 1967, where he worked until his retirement. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the American Heart Association – American Stroke Association , Mid-Atlantic Affiliate, Memorial & Tribute Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216. The family will gather for a private memorial service. Arrangements are being handled by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
