Jessie Wilbert Wright, 84, of Radford, Va., passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at the VA Hospital in Johnson City, Tenn. He was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church. He was a United States Army World War II veteran and former POW, and was captured in Germany in 1944 while serving with the 28th Infantry Division. He was recognized for 50 years of service to the Disabled American Veterans. He was born May 24, 1924, the son of the late Sherman E. and Hattie Hinkley Wright. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Frances B. Wright, of Radford; a daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Edward Sams, of Watauga, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Larry Sams, of Radford, and Derek Sams, of Lynchburg; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at the Gethsemane Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin where members of VFW Post #7854 of Floyd will conduct Military Graveside Rites. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, October 31, 2008, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
