Marjorie Thompson Word, 88, formerly of Christiansburg, Va., passed away Monday, March 27, 2006 at her home in University Village in Tampa, Florida.

Born August 10, 1917, she was preceded in death by her parents, Ira Thompson and Ollie Clarke Thompson and her beloved husband, J. Walton Word.

She is survived by her sister, Evelyn Rawls of Norfolk, Va.; nephew, Edward L. (Chip) Rawls and wife, Jean Carol of Chesapeake, Va.; and grandnephews, Chris and Eddie Rawls, also of Chesapeake. She is also survived by her godson, D. Michael Barber and wife, Erlene of Christiansburg, Va.; and special friend, Shirley Mims of Tampa, Fla.

Marjorie was an avid bridge player, she enjoyed playing tournaments and socially with members of the various clubs she belonged to. Her health allowed her to play weekly in Florida until shortly before her death.

She was a member of McDaniel Chapter #47 Order of the Eastern Star in Christiansburg and was a past Worthy Matron and maintained her membership with the local chapter until her death.

Those who knew Marjorie will remember her as a very talented and creative person, one with deep convictions, faith and beliefs. She touched many lives and was loved and respected by all who knew her.

Funeral services are planned for later at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Christiansburg.
