Woolwine, James Ted

James Ted Woolwine, of Christiansburg, passed into the arms of Jesus at 94 years of age on Thursday, June 30, 2011. He was born to the late Jacob A. and Lizzie B. Linkous Woolwine on March 9, 1917. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Jacob Junior, Trigg Mosby, Joseph, Louis Oakley (Tip) Woolwine and Lorraine W. Akers. He is survived by his stepson, G. Wayne Woolwine and wife, Rita, of Virginia Beach, and his children, Pamela, Christopher and Eric; and four grandchildren. Also surviving are his wife, Margaret; her son, Donald Smith and wife, Denise, of Rocky Mount; her daughter, Angela Gasser and husband, Christopher, of Nokesville; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Ted was a retired World War II United States Navy veteran, having proudly served his country from 1935 to 1955. He retired with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. In 1961, Ted started a new career when he was appointed federal probation officer by the late Judge Ted Dalton. He retired 20 years later as Chief Federal Probation Officer for the Western District of Virginia. Several years ago, Ted was recognized by the McDaniel Masonic Lodge of Christiansburg for 60 years of membership. He attended Lodge meetings in ports around the world during his years in the U.S. Navy. Ted loved people and never met a stranger. Playing golf and talking politics were his passions. Ted was a longtime member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Memorials may be considered to St. Paul United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 220 West Main St., Christiansburg, VA 24073 or to the Christiansburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 176, Christiansburg, VA 24068. The Funeral Service will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, 2011, at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Reverend Michael Copeland and the Reverend Doug Kanney officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Mercy Seat Cemetery in Halifax County.
