Woodyard, Wallace Wain

Wallace Wain Woodyard, 87, of Pulaski, died on Thursday morning, June 30, 2011, in Lewis Gale Hospital Pulaski. He was born on May 14, 1924, in Giles County, and was the son of the late Mary Breedlove Woodyard and Efrum Hoge Woodyard. Mr. Woodyard was a proud Veteran of the United States Navy, having served in World War II. He was a Higgins Boat operator who participated in the first wave invasion on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France on June 6, 1944. His (LCVP) was sunk, and he spent the entire day on the beach unarmed. Later that day he was later taken to England and returned the following day on LST-376. It too was sunk by a German torpedo. More importantly, Mr. Woodyard will not only be remembered as an important D-Day Veteran, but will be remembered as an individual who was extremely proud of his country and the men and women who fought for its freedom. He was a member of the American Legion, a Lifetime member of the VFW Post 1184, was a proud contributor and supporter of the National D-Day Memorial, was a member of the Pulaski Presbyterian Church in America, was a proud, retired employee of Jefferson Mills with 47 years of supervision in their machine shop, and was a 50 plus year member of Pythagoras Masonic Lodge #239 A.F.& A.M., Pulaski, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Ellen Virginia Woodyard; sister, Eunice Spaur; and brothers, Ernest Woodyard, Buford Woodyard, and Willard Woodyard his twin brother. He is survived by a special niece and nephew, Peggy Fields, of Pulaski, and Eddie Woodyard, of Dublin; and several other nieces. He is also survived by his special caretakers, Betty Oldford, Stephanie Robertson, Jennifer Harman, and Tammy Robertson. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, 2011, at Seagle Funeral Home with the Rev. David Dennis officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens where the VFW Post 1184 will conduct Military Honors. The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 2, 2011, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
