Carolyn Louise (Perk) Woodson, formerly of Newport, Va., departed this life Wednesday evening, February 3, 2010, in the loving care of her family at Amherst after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Giles County on March 14, 1949, she was a daughter of the late Carroll Perkins and Lucille Conley Martin.

She was a woman of great faith and strength and had been employed at Sweet Briar College. She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather, Paul Cumbee and her first husband, Marvin Tawney.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Jerry D. Woodson, of Amherst; her son and daughter-in-law, Ward A. (Andy) and Crystal Tawney, of Bailey, Colorado; her daughter and son-in-law, Michelle T. and Michael Raines, of Newport; her grandchildren, that she absolutely adored, Makayla M. Tawney, Wyatt T. Tawney, Cassidy M. Raines; her brother and sisters, Robert Cumbee, of Pembroke, Helen Griggs, of Pearisburg, Brenda and Gary Martin, of Newport, Sandra Smith, of Newport, Hazel Cumbee, of Hoges Chapel, Doris Cumbee of Pembroke; her in-laws, Donnie and Christine Woodson, of Richmond, Billy and Jerry Woodson, of Amherst, Betty Sue and Lee Bryant, of Amherst.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke, with Pastor Eddie Kendall and Pastor Wayman Cregger officiating.
