Wohlford, Sr., William “Cheese”

wohlford william srWilliam (Cheese) Wohlford, Sr., of Blacksburg, went to be with the Lord on August 16, 2013. He was the son of the late Thomas Crockett and Lelia Frye Wohlford. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas C. Jr., Ralph B. and Kenneth S. Wohlford.

Cheese will be deeply missed by his surviving family including his wife, Retha (Vickie) Blue Wohlford; two daughters, Tammy Fritz of Richmond, and Michelle and husband Dave Bush of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sons, William (Bill) Wohlford Jr. and his wife Melissa of Marietta, Ga. and Michael Wohlford and wife Marcy of Roanoke; grandchildren, Laura and Scott Fritz, Bethany and Josh Hunter, Rachel and Josh Dameron, Matthew Wohlford, Haley and Mallory Wohlford, and Kailey Bush. He is survived in death by his loving brother, Lowell C. Wohlford of Anderson, S.C. He also leaves behind many nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends who will miss his loving nature and sense of humor. Born on November 20, 1933 in Wytheville, Cheese served in the United States Army as a young man before beginning a 33 year career at the Blacksburg Post Office where he retired in 1989. After retiring, he worked at the VT Campus Golf Course until July of 2013. Cheese loved his community where he served many years as a coach for Youth football and baseball at the Blacksburg Recreation Department coaching kids whom he kept up with until his death. Cheese also worked for the VT Athletic Department for football and basketball and was the first VT women’s softball coach, taking them from a club sport to a varsity sport in his two years. He was loved by everyone who knew him. The family will receive friends at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg on Saturday, August 24, 2013 from 1 to 4 p.m. A private family funeral will be held at Westview Cemetery Blacksburg. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Blacksburg Baptist Church Land of Promise Building Fund 550 N.
