Neal Hampton Wirt, 73, of Pulaski, died Saturday June 15, 2013, at Lewis Gale Hospital-Pulaski, following a lengthy illness. He was born on March 15, 1940, and was the son of the late Marie Millirons Wirt and Ralph T. Wirt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Durmon Wirt; and a stepfather, L. Edward Gilbert.

He is survived by a son, Neal Hampton Wirt Jr., of Woodlawn, and Hampton’s mother, Loretta Petty Wirt Evans, of Galax; a brother, Ralph T. Wirt Jr. and his wife, Martha, of Claytor Lake; sister, Linda Gilbert Young of Kannapolis, N.C.; uncle, R. Lloyd Matthews, of Pulaski; uncle, Owen Millirons and his wife, Doris Mabe Millirons, of Reisterstown, Md.; niece, Tanya Cromers; and nine other nieces and one nephew; friend, Mary Jem Tucker, of Dublin.

Neal graduated from Pulaski High School in 1958, and attended Emory & Henry College and Wytheville Community College. He served in the United States Navy for four years, where he served on the U.S.S. Rankin. He was a Licensed Land Surveyor in the New River Valley for over 30 years. He was a life-long member of the Methodist Church, first at Jordan’s Chapel United Methodist Church, and later at the First United Methodist Church. He was a Sunday School Teacher, and was active in the United Methodist Men, as well as many other ministries of the church. Neal will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday June 19, 2013, at Seagle Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin where the V.F.W. Post 1184 will conduct military honors. The family will receive friends Wednesday at the funeral home from noon until 2 p.m. service time.

Flowers will be appreciated, but for those who wish, they may make memorial contributions in his memory to First United Methodist Church or to the Special Olympics.
