Mattie Gaynell Skeens Wimmer, 86, of Fairlawn, Va., passed away on Monday, August 2, 2010, in the Pulaski Health Care Center. Born on June 3, 1924, in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Jefferson Skeens and Mary Magdaline Fogleman Skeens. She was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Sara Dishner Skeens; one brother, Stanley Skeens; and four sisters, Bessie Skeens, Florence Skeens Chester, June Skeens Isaacs, and Jean Skeens Owen. She was retired from RAAP with 38 years of service and was a member of the Dublin Baptist Church. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, David and Nancy Early, of Dublin; two grandchildren, Michael C. Early, of Salem, and Donna Tabor and husband, Denny Tabor, of Newbern; two special great-grandchildren, Rachel and Kendra Tabor, of Newbern; one sister, Margaret Skeens Overbay, of Salem; two brothers, Dale Skeens and wife, Billie Skeens, of Dublin, and Harry Skeens and wife, Mary Ann Skeens, of Chester; sister-in-law, Doris Wimmer, of Norfolk; brother-in-law, Jimmy Wimmer and wife, Grace Wimmer, of Shawsville; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 5, 2010, at the Dublin Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening, August 4, 2010, at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski.
