whitt_thomas_ray_srThomas Ray Whitt, Sr., devoted husband and loving father, passed away Friday, September 2, 2011. Ray, a native of Radford, attended Virginia Tech and was employed as a sales manager for 36 years by Roanoke Electric Steel Corp. Ray also served in the United States Air Force. Ray was known for his love of the game of golf. He spent many hours playing in his younger years. He also enjoyed his times with family, friends and former classmates. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Matthew Hudson Woods. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Mary Howe-St. Clair Whitt, whom Ray spoke of in his last days as his “angel” that cared for him so lovingly. Ray is survived by three children and their spouses, Charles “Chuck” Woods and wife Sue Claypool Woods, daughter Nancy Woods Lusk and husband Steve Lusk, and son Thomas Ray Whitt, Jr. and wife Teresa Whitt. He had eight grandchildren, Ben Woods and his wife Sara, Bill Woods and his wife Jacque, Jordan Whitt, Justin Lusk, Kara Lusk, Molly Lusk, Emily Lusk and Anna Belle Lusk, and one great-grandson, Briar Charles Woods. The family would like to give special thanks to Carilion Hospice for their compassion, support and loving care. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with the Rev. Gina Rhea officiating. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. at the Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
