CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. — Fred Allen Whaling, age 77, passed away in his Christiansburg, Va. home peacefully, on Saturday, August 21, 2010. Fred was born in Eckman, W.Va. on February 2, 1933. Even though he lived in Blacksburg, Va. for the last 24 years, he was a West Virginia boy through and through. Mr. Whaling was a veteran of the Armed Services and a retired coal miner. Fred was preceded in death by his son, Richard Whaling; mother, Muriel Whaling; father, James Whaling; two sisters, Carol and Sylvie; and two brothers, Charlie and Pete. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sally Whaling; his daughter, Rhonda Whaling of Blacksburg; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Terri Whaling of Christiansburg; Ronnie Whaling of Cocoa Beach, Fla. and son Daniel Whaling of Blacksburg; son and a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Shawna and Zak Miller of Napa, Calif. He is also survived by five sisters, Mildred Belcher, Virgie Musick, Eva Schroeter, Ruth Uhalde and Freda Higdon; and two brothers, Herman Whaling and Frank Whaling. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Fred was dedicated to his family and always took care of them before himself. He was a good Christian man and lived a true Christian life. Whenever anything was asked of him, he gave it no matter what it was. He always believed in helping others. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home, Bluewell, W.Va., on Tuesday, August 24, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., followed by the funeral service officiated by Pastor Betty Lusk. The graveside service will immediately follow at Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery. The pallbearers will be his nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that a donation be made to the American Cancer Society in their father’s name.
