Weyer, James F.

Mr. James Francis Weyer, 88, of Radford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 17, 2008. Mr. Weyer was born in Holyoke, Mass., and raised in Chesapeake, Va., and served as a pilot in the United States Navy during World War II. Following the war, Mr. Weyer began a career with the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company. His career led him to Radford in 1964 and he remained with the telephone company until his retirement.

An active member of the community, Mr. Weyer was a former president of the Radford Kiwanis Club and a parishioner of St. Jude’s Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed traveling, reading, playing cards with friends, and he had a lifetime love of the Ocean. Mr. Weyer will be fondly remembered for his kind spirit, his respect for others and his sense of humor. Jim, as he was affectionately known, will be missed by many.

Mr. Weyer was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary. He is survived by his wife, Carol; and her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Lori Wills; by his son, Edward, daughter-in-law, Maureen; and two grandsons, Galen and Andrew; and by his son, Richard; and daughterin-law, Sherry, both of State College, Pa. He is also survived by ids brother, Mr. George S. Weyer, of Denison, Texas, and spouse, Nancy; their daughter, Susan, and their granddaughter, Laura; nephew, Mr. Barry Shiflett; and spouse, Joan, of Raleigh, N.C.; and niece, Mary Kay Sloop; and spouse, Warren, of Glen Allen, Va.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Radford at 12 noon on Friday, June 20, 2008. The family will greet friends prior to the mass at St. Jude’s at 11 a.m.

The family warmly appreciates the kindness of the Amy and Loffe families and Darlene Jones and extends their gratitude to all of the friends, neighbors and care providers who brought comfort and support to Mr. Weyer, especially during his final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Good Samaritan Hospice, Inc. with offices in Christiansburg and Roanoke. DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford is handling the arrangements.
