Westmoreland, James Kenneth

James Kenneth “Sonny” Westmoreland, of Galax, VA (formerly of Christiansburg, VA), beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, went to heaven on Sunday, June 18, 2023. He was born September 9, 1944, in Christiansburg, VA to the late William W. and Evelyn Breen Westmoreland.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy Thompson Westmoreland; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Brad Dillon of Galax, VA; three grandchildren, Spencer Dillon, Sidney Rose Dillon, and Zoe Dillon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Evelyn Westmoreland, and sister, Leola Graham.

He is survived by three brothers, Ronnie and wife, Jackie, Donnie and wife, Sue, and Tommy; two sisters, Nancy Graham and Teresa Pettus and husband, Steve; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Sonny was a graduate of Christiansburg High School and Nashville Auto and Diesel College. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic in Vietnam and retired from Appalachian Power after 33 years of service.

Sonny was a dedicated member of First United Methodist Church, Galax, VA for 47 years. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone and found joy in doing so.

Sonny had a special place in his heart for disabled veterans. The family would appreciate donations be made to: Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark McFadden, Dr. Kevin Rosenfeld, and Rev. Neal Turner officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service at McCoy Funeral Home and a separate visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, from 5-7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Galax, VA.
