Weber, Larry J.

Larry J. Weber of Blacksburg, Va., passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2010. He was born on June 1, 1930, in Evansville, Ind., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Asa Weber.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of 56 years, whom he loved dearly; six children and spouses, Catherine Lacy, Theresa and Roger Robinson, Joan and William White, Asa and Donna Weber, Joseph and Sylvia Weber, and Michael and Sandy Weber; 11 grandchildren, Adrienne, David and Heather, Brittany, Brian, Thomas, Brandon, Aaron, Lauren, Samuel, Courtney and Justin; and a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Don Phillips, of Leesburg, Fla.

Larry served on the faculty at the College of Education at Virginia Tech for 28 years. Upon his retirement he was appointed Professor Emeritus and continued to serve at Tech in an advisory capacity to faculty and graduate students. During his tenure he authored and co-authored more than 200 manuscripts for publication and presentation to national and international professional audiences. In the 1980s he directed graduate programs for individuals teaching in American International schools throughout South America. He subsequently was named a Fulbright Scholar and served as senior lecturer at the National Catholic University of Chile.

Larry received his bachelor’s degree from Marquette University. After teaching four years at Pensacola, Fla., Catholic High School, he obtained his master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1961. He received his doctorate in educational psychology from the University of Illinois in 1966. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was a naval aviator.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 25, 2010, from 6 until 8 p.m. and on Sunday, September 26, 2010, for the Rosary from 7:30 until 8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held 11:30 a.m. on Monday, September 27, 2010, at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg.
