Watterson, Samuel Joseph

Samuel Joseph Watterson, 93, of Elliston, died Wednesday, October 10, 2018. Born April 5, 1925 in Ironto, Virginia to Charles and Susan Goddwin Watterson. He was a World War II Veteran. In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his brother Charles “Buddy” Watterson, sister Elizabeth Kicklighter, daughter Lisa Watterson, and wife Marynell Watterson.

His interests included hunting, fishing, boating on Smith Mountain Lake, as well as a good game of checkers and never letting anyone win. He also loved going to the shooting matches and gunsmithing rifles to make a clean shoot on a target. As well as being friends with Buddy, Larry, Jack, Cecil, Tommy, Lawton, and Barnett to name a few.

Mr. Watterson is survived by sister, Louise Spangler; son, Steve Watterson and wife Carol; daughter, Rebecca Sue Watterson; grandchildren, Elizabeth Weingart and husband Ed, Christopher Stockton and wife Esther, and Jennifer Renzetti and husband Rich; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Simpson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to service time. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home. (540)366-0707.
