Joseph Turner Warren, 85, of Radford, Va., died at his home on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, after a long illness. He was born in Delaplane, Va., on September 8, 1923, son of the late Maysie Hatcher Warren and Joseph Tucker Warren.

His early education was at Christ Church School, Va., and later at Virginia Military Institute. He was a veteran of World War II. One of the first people in the engineering training program, he managed virtually every level in the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation, and retired as Director of Operations.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne Stover Warren; and a brother, James Morris Warren. Survivors include his wife, Mabbot Perkins Warren, of Radford; a son, Joseph Warren Jr. and his wife, Helen Cardwell, of Franklin, Ky.; a daughter, Mary Anne Diehl and her husband Edward Diehl, of Richmond, Va.; two stepchildren, David Ridout, of Radford, and Robin Borkowski, of Savannah, Ga.; and his three grandchildren, Christopher Warren, Jennifer Valerga and Mark Harmon and his wife, Sara.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2009, at the Presbyterian Church of Radford with the Rev. David Dickerson officiating.
