Walters, Margaret Ethel Lucas

Margaret Ethel Lucas Walters, 95, formerly of Pembroke, Va., departed this life Sunday morning, April 13, 2008, at her Sharon Towers residence in Charlotte, N.C.

Mrs. Walters was born July 22, 1912, in Giles County, Va., a daughter of J. Stewart and Florence Williams Lucas. She lived most of her life in Pembroke, Va., and moved to Charlotte in recent years to be near her daughter. She is survived by a daughter, Anita W. Pendergraph and son-in-law, B. Gale Pendergraph, of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, Kim Pendergraph, of Atlanta, Ga., Belinda T. Haagsma, of Ashburn, Va., Nicole P. McLean, of Columbia, S.C., and Brian R. Thacker, of Spring Hill, Tenn.; and their families. She is also survived by nine greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Walters is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Newton L. Walters; her daughter, Carol Lee Walters Thacker; a sister, Helen Auvil; a brother, Minor Lucas; an infant brother, Charles Cephas Lucas; a niece, Shirley L. Hall; and nephews, Danny Ray Lucas and David V. Auvil.

She was an active and dedicated member of Pembroke Christian Church and was on of the first two women elders elected in her church. She was member of the George Pearis Chapter of the DAR, the Giles County Historical Society, Pembroke Women’s Club and several church organizations. Mrs. Walters attended Radford College in the 1930’s and completed a two-year program with a Normal Professional Teaching Certificate in elementary education. She had a life-long love for history and in the 1990’s helped to write the history of Giles County and wrote the Pembroke Christian Church’s 100th Anniversary History booklet. Mrs. Walters devoted most of her life to being a homemaker. Earlier she taught school in Giles County and worked briefly for Celanese in Narrows, Va.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2008, in The Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke, Va., with the Rev. Doctor George Mullins and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg, Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours before the services. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Pembroke Christian Church, P.O.
