Wall, Penkey Edward

Penkey Edward Wall, 79, of Narrows, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2009, at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. A lifelong resident of Giles County, he was born on November 12, 1929, and was the son of the late Phlegar Penkey and Thelma Irene Conley Wall.

In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Joyce Shelbyjen Ferrell Wall; a daughter, Wanda Akers; two brothers, Carl Wall and George Wall; and a sister, Lucille Clemons.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War, and was a retired employee from the Town of Narrows with over 20 years of service in the public works department. A skilled carpenter and handyman, Penkey was also a devoted father and grandfather. He’ll be deeply missed by his family, and all who knew him.

He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Dreama and Berlin Hayes, of Narrows and Sandy and Tim Price, of Pembroke; four grandchildren, Shanan Akers, of Flatwoods, Kentucky, Kayla Hayes, of Narrows, Taylor and Emilee Price, of Pembroke; one great-grandson, Michael Akers, of Flatwoods, Kentucky; two brothers, Marl Wall, of Bluefield and Richard Wall, of Narrows; six sisters, Burnease Bivens, of Narrows, Dorothy Stowers, of Christiansburg, Mary Walker, of Salem, Louise Stowers, of Rocky Gap, Linda Mann, of Peterstown (who was like another daughter to Penkey), and Jean Ferguson, of Narrows; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and one very special friend, J.T. Frazier, of Narrows.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at 2 p.m. at East Chapel Community Church on Wolf Creek Road in Narrows with Pastor Tim Lacy officiating. Burial will follow in Boyd Cemetery in the Wolf Creek community with graveside rites conducted by VFW Post #6000 of Narrows, American Legion Post #68 of Narrows, American Legion Post #311 of Pembroke, and American Legion Post #145 of Peterstown. The family will receive friends at Riffe’s Funeral Service Tuesday, from 6 to 9 p.m.
