walker hazel topsaleHazel Topsale Walker, 97, of Blacksburg, formerly of Narrows, passed away Thursday, November 29, 2012, at Lewis Gale Hospital Montgomery in Blacksburg. She was born in Narrows on May 6, 1915 and was the daughter of the late Mr. James and Mrs. Lucy Enders Topsale. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Hubert Lee Walker Sr.; five brothers Archie Topsale, Roy Topsale, James Everett Topsale, Bernard Topsale, Dolphin Topsale; and two sisters, Ercell Pate and Beatrice Boyd. Hazel graduated from Christiansburg Institute, attended Bluefield State Teacher’s College, and retired from Appalachian Power Company, where she served as an accountant in the Pearisburg office. She was a member of the Virginia Tech Faculty Woman’s Club, University Club, and a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Christiansburg. A loving wife and mother who loved to cook and entertain, Hazel also loved flowers, decorating and music. Left to cherish her memory are a son, Hubert Lee Walker Jr., of Blacksburg; a sister-in-law, Lila Hicks, of Roanoke; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends, including Paul and Carol Johnson, and neighbor Marylou. She also dearly loved her canine companion, Bentley. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 8, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church in Church in Christiansburg with the Rev. George M. Warner Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Asbury United Methodist Church Saturday from noon until just prior to the service.
