James Columbus Waddell, 82, of Fairlawn, Va., passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at his home. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Navy, and was a retired employee of RAAP. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wiley Eugene and Mattie Wright Waddell; a twin brother, Robert Waddell; and a sister, Joella Waddell.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Nancy Jarrett Waddell; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Don McCulley, of Ijamsville, Md., and Carolyn and Turney Goad, of Ijamsville, Md.; five sons and daughters-in-law, James and Doris Waddell Jr., of Radford, Tim and Delores Waddell, of Winchester, Va., Steve and Kay Waddell, of Dublin, Paul Waddell, of Fairlawn, and Jeffery Waddell, of Christiansburg; two brothers and sister-in-law, Pierce Waddell, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and John and Dottie Waddell, of Erie, Pa.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Maudella and Moe Franks and Hazel and Junior Gadd, both of Garrettsville, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his beloved pet, Smokey.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2009, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with the Rev. William Ratcliffe officiating. Entombment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Dublin where members of VFW Post #776 will conduct Military Graveside Rites. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2009, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
