Herbert Cecil (Jack) Vencill, 89, formerly of Ripplemead, Va., died on Wednesday, October 22, 2008, in Abingdon, Va., where he resided at Grace Health Care. He was born January 10, 1919, in Russell County, the first child of the late Arleigh and Bess Marshall Vencill.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy and owner of the H.C. Vencill Trucking Company.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mary Bostic Vencill; a brother, Sam Vencill; and a sister, Mary Steele Vencill. He is survived by a sister, Gene Vencill; and a special sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Vencill, of the Belfast Community. Also surviving are a son, Stephen Vencill, of Bluefield, Va., and his daughter, Barbara Vencill, of Roanoke, Va.; a daughter, Portia V. Munsey and husband, Hamp, of Greensboro, N.C., their children, Michele Munsey Fox and Todd Munsey; and great-grandchildren, Olivia, Matthew, and Caroline Fox, Charlotte and Walker Munsey, all who called him “Greatgranddaddy Jack.”

The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 25, 2008, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke. Burial will be private. A memorial service will follow on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Va.
