Shirley Uttal of Blacksburg died on February 2, 2013. Mrs. Uttal was born in Norfolk, Va. on April 23, 1924, where she lived until her marriage in 1944. After graduation from Maury High School, she worked at the Norfolk Naval Base. After her husband left the navy, they lived on Long Island, N.Y. They moved to Florida, where Mrs. Uttal and her husband owned and operated motels. In 1959, they returned to Virginia, where they owned and operated a motel north of Lynchburg, VA. Mrs. Uttal was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard J. Uttal, her parents, Harry and Celia Goldman Fine, two sisters, Anne Kessler and Sylvia Pogolowitz, and a brother, Milton Fine. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Jerry Klavans of Milton, DE., and Jeannie and Smith Breeden of Columbia, SC, and a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. David and Linda Uttal of Evanston, IL., five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Helen Epner Lapping and Thelma Oser, and one brother, Dr. Morris Fine. Mrs. Uttal was a charter member of Blacksburg Jewish Community Center. She was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Bread for the World, and the Parent Support and Advocacy Program. Mrs. Uttal volunteered for many years with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Montgomery County, and she was well known in Blacksburg and Christiansburg for her love and care of children. A service will be held at 1:00 pm Sunday, February 3, 2013 at the McCoy Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 12:00 pm Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Culpeper National Cemetery, Culpeper, VA. In lieu of flowers , memorial contributions may be made to the Blacksburg Jewish Community Center, P.O. Box 782 , Blacksburg, VA. 24063. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home.
