Irene Elizabeth Beall Unfug, 85, of Christiansburg, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2007 after suffering a severe stroke.

She was preceded in passing by her husband, Carl G. Unfug. She is survived by her son, Raymond R. Unfug and his wife Theresa J. Unfug, both of Christiansburg; several nieces and nephews and a very dear sister-in-law.

Irene was born in Washington, D.C. on October 17, 1921. Irene worked in the Notification Division of the U.S. Navy during WWII and again as a secretary at the U.S. Navy’s David W. Taylor Research and Development facility, retiring with 20 years of civilian service.

She was very active in the Galilee United Methodist Church while living in Broad Run Farms, Va., where she raised her family. She was an active member of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames Chapters in Sterling, Va. before retiring to Christiansburg in 1991. Upon joining the Colonel William Campbell Chapter of the DAR in Radford, Va., she continued to be active in the organization and held several positions as well as Regent of the chapter for one term. Irene continued her activities in the Colonial Dames chapter in Roanoke. She was a member of Grove United Methodist Church in Radford.

A memorial service for Irene will be held at the Grove United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2007 with the Rev. James L. Bennington officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the memorial service. It was Irene’s wish that in lieu of flowers, for donations to be made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or your local Humane Society.
