Elma S. Turman, 87, of Floyd, passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at New River Valley Medical Center.

She was born on April 20, 1919 to Joshua and Ellen (Nichols) Thompson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Turman.

“Ma” came from a large family and was no stranger to hard work. She was well known as a very good cook and worked many years at the cafeteria of the Floyd Elementary School. She also generously donated her efforts to various community groups. She was a member of Floyd United Methodist Church, the Floyd Rebekahs Lodge, TOPS, and various other organizations over the years. She was very active up until her death and enjoyed getting out as much as possible, including working out at the fitness center. She sincerely appreciated those that gave her rides to the activities and their friendship. She was extremely dedicated to her children and she will be missed.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles W. and Victoria Turman, Blacksburg, Va., Thornton L. and Linda Turman, Bogart, Ga., Larry D. Turman, Floyd, Va.; grandchildren, Chuck and Debbie Turman, Springboro, Ohio, Chris and Treva Turman, Blacksburg, Va., Craig Turman, Nashville Tenn., Lee Turman, Bogart Ga.; great-grandchildren, Amber, McKenzie, Lucas, Logan, Courtney and Carly Turman; sisters, Aileen St. Clair, Roanoke Va., Lois Hammond, Salem Va.; numerous nephews and nieces; special family friend, LaVern Beaver and her daughter Alexis.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, January 12, 2007 at Floyd United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Gregory officiating. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to either the Floyd County Fire Department, P.O. Box 33, Floyd, Va. 24091 or the Floyd County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 257, Floyd, Va. 24091.
