On June 11, 2014, Eva Nell Swaim Townsend was called Home to be with Our Father in Heaven, forever to live in peace and happiness with those who have been called before her. Born on February 22, 1924 in Bluefield, Virginia, Nell was an artist with thread, whether she was embroidering, crocheting, quilting, or knitting. All of her creations are true works of art. Nell was also a patriot having served our nation during World War II in the U.S. Navy, WAVES. Nell was quiet, unassuming, and fun-loving. She loved her family and devoted her life to their well-being.
Nell is preceded in death by her parents, Esley Jacob and Miram Janie Swaim; her oldest daughter, Penny Townsend Hutton; brother, Marvin J. Swaim; sister, Elsie Swaim Meredith; and son in-law, David W. Thomas.
Surviving Nell is her husband of more than 63 years, Thomas (Tom) Townsend; daughters and son in-law Pamela Townsend Thomas, and Patsy (Townsend) and David Hosner; and grandsons Steven Thomas and Jason Hosner.
The Townsend family wishes to thank the following Roanoke Memorial Hospital staff members: Doctors Deepa Kuchelan, Michael Boyd, and Edwardo Rubio; and the hospitalists, nurses, and staff of 9-South. The family would also like to thank Dr. Harry McCoy and his staff for their care over the years. In addition, the family wishes to thank all of those who sent prayers and well wishes.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 14 at 2:00 pm in the Mullins Funeral Home Chapel in Radford with the Reverend Bobby Sutphin officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Christiansburg. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 noon until 2:00 pm at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Unity Christian Church, 400 Tyler Avenue, Radford, VA 24141.
