Torgersen, Dorothea (Dot)

torgersen_dortheaDorothea (Dot) Torgersen, 84, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born in Staten Island, NY on December 18, 1929 to the late Theodore and Johanna Zuschlag. Dot was a active volunteer within the community, a gracious hostess who welcomed two generations of Virginia Tech students into her home, an avid Hokie sports fan who could be difficult to sit next to during games.

She enjoyed lunches with her friends and singing songs to her beloved great granddaughter. In earlier years she had a unique whistle that could be heard throughout the neighborhood and was a clear sign, to her children, that it was time to come home. Most importantly she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Paul Torgersen; two daughters and son-in-law, Karen Torgersen and Mike Boyd, of Blacksburg, Va., Janis Torgersen, of Oxford, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Lynda Torgersen, of Claytor Lake, Va.; six grandchildren, Lindsay Nalevanko, Bryan Reisch, Erin Reisch, Michael Reisch, Paul Torgersen, Samantha McElwee; two great-grandchildren, Isabelle Dorothea Nalevanko, Collin Nalevanko; and a sister Elizabeth Schneider.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 1:00 PM in the Blacksburg United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott West and Rev. Samantha Torgersen McElwee officiating. The family will receive friends at Christ Episcopal Church Parish Hall, following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
