Thorne, Mildred Spicer

Mildred Spicer Thorne, 87 of Narrows, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 30th, 2017.

A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born on November 3rd, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Joseph Spicer and Josephine Blankenship Spicer. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters; and a special niece, Shirley Walters.

Mildred was a faithful member of New Valley Fellowship in Narrows and a passionate Virginia Tech Hokie fan. She enjoyed tending to flowers and flower beds, cookouts, holidays and birthday celebrations with her family. She also made many friends while working at the former Blackwell’s IGA in Narrows. Mildred also enjoyed housekeeping and keeping her home immaculate. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, she will be dearly missed by her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 68 years, Aubrey Thorne; three children, Pam Cardwell and husband Larry of Narrows; Mark Thorne of Pine Mountain, Georgia; Angie Shupe and husband Jerry of Danville, Virginia; three grandchildren, Charity Hughes of Narrows, Tanner Carbaugh of Blacksburg, and Austin Gill of Erwin, Tennessee; four great-grandchildren, Lauryn Hughes, Leah Hughes, Summer Gill, and Autumn Gill; seven step-grandchildren; 15 step-great grandchildren; a special brother-in-law, Rocky Thorne and wife Mitzi of Narrows; a special niece, Skeeter Sheally and husband John of Narrows; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends, including Geraldine.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017 at 2 PM in the Chapel of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows with Rev. D.J. Chambers officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows. The family will receive friends at Riffe’s Funeral Chapel Wednesday from 1 PM until just prior to the service. Flowers are encouraged.
