John William Thompson, 101, of Pembroke, departed this life Thursday, July 29, 2010, at Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg. Born in Burkes Garden, Tazewell County on October 8, 1908, he was a son of the late John M. and Lucy Asbury Thompson.

Mr. Thompson had been employed as a coal miner at Boissevain and was retired from National Gypsum Company at Goldbond. He was a Christian of the Baptist Faith and was instrumental with his wife and others in founding Castle Rock Baptist Church in Pembroke.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eileen Moser Thompson; his son, Bobby Joe Thompson, his grandson, Andy Thompson; and his greatgreatgranddaughters, Hope Graham and Angela Estep. He leaves to cherish his memory his sons and daughters-in-law, William P. and Joyce Thompson, of Milwaukee, Wis., John Grady and Elva Thompson, of Richmond, Va., Fred D. and Sue Thompson, of Pembroke; his daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Ruth Porterfield, of Gap Mills, W.Va., Shirley A. Williams, of Christiansburg, Mildred Eileen and Freddie Ray Ratcliffe, of Pembroke, Betty Lou and Jim Carter, of Pembroke; his sisters, Mary Purdy, of North Carolina, Margaret Crawford, of Neours, Julie Pauley, of Yards; his special friend, Hazel Kirk; his 23 grandchildren; his 44 greatgrandchildren; and his nine greatgreatgrandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke with Pastor Eddie Kendall, Pastor Shahn Wilburn, and Pastor Rob Laugh officiating. Burial will follow in the Moser Cemetery at Goldbond.
