Tate, Phyllis Hale

Phyllis Hale Tate, 88, of Blacksburg passed away on June 22, 2013, after a brief illness. The daughter of the late Ruth Wilson and Philip Dow Hale, Sr., she was born in Blacksburg, Virginia, on February 3, 1925.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dewitt Tate, Jr., her brothers Philip Dow Hale, Jr., Edward Wilson Hale, and Philip Lewis Hale, and her sisters Ann Hale Williams and Ruth Hale Parker.

She is survived by her children, Patricia Tate McMichael, Norfolk, VA, Ruth Tate Simpson (Thomas Edward Simpson), Richmond, VA, and Dr. Robert Hale Tate, Lakeland, FL; her grandchildren Robert Dewey McMichael IV, Virginia Beach, VA, Katherine Whitney Simpson, Richmond, VA, and Sgt. David Parker Simpson, Richmond, VA; and ten nieces and nephews.

A life-long resident of Blacksburg, she was retired from the Sports Information Office at Virginia Tech and was an active and devoted member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church.

A visitation with family and friends will be held at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, on Sunday, June 23, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m.. on Monday, June 24, at Blacksburg United Methodist Church, 111 Church Street with Rev. Reggie Tuck officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery.
