Roberta Hedrick Sutphin, 84, of Pulaski, Va., died on Wednesday morning, February 4, 2009, in Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born on May 13, 1924, in Roanoke, and was the daughter of the late Samuel Clinton Hedrick Sr. and Ella Akers Hedrick.

She was a member of the Fairlawn Grace Brethren Church, was a former manager of Charles Department Store in Pulaski, was a personnel manager of the W.T. Grants in Pulaski, and also retired from the Sports Ware Mart in Pulaski.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Ewing Sutphin; and a brother, Samuel Clinton Hedrick Jr. She is survived by two sons, Everett Lee “Bucky” Sutphin and his wife, Catherine, of Rocky Mount, Va., and Bobby Lynn Sutphin, of Pulaski; two daughters, Donna Sutphin Forrester and her husband, Larry, of Roanoke, and Carol Sutphin Smith and her husband, Stephen, of Blacksburg; two sisters, Dorothy “Dottie” Waller, of Baltimore, Md., and Betty Lou Makris, of Piney Flats, Tenn. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Nenia Sutphin Hodges and husband, David, Judy Sutphin Nunley and her husband, Todd, Jody Sutphin Neel, and Gregory Matthew Sutphin, all of Roanoke, Teresa Sutphin Shell and her husband, Eric, of Bedford, Adrienne Sutphin Parks and her husband, Jamie, of Lexington, Ky., Adam Sutphin, of Pulaski, and Brittany and Chelsea Smith, of Blacksburg; four greatgrandchildren, Courtney and Stephanie Hodges, of Roanoke, and Cody and Clay Shell, of Bedford; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 8, 2009, at the Fairlawn Grace Brethren Church, 6893 Mills Avenue in Fairlawn with Pastor Lester Kennedy officiating. Entombment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening, February 7, 2009, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the church.
