Margaret Ann Chumbley Surface, 81, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Kroontje Health Care Center. She was born on her grandfather Chumbley’s farm in Dublin, Va. on December 28, 1934 to the late Robert Allen Chumbley who was killed on a job related accident when she was 10 years old and also preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Foster Chumbley.

Ann and her brother, Bob were raised by her aunt and uncle, Hazel and Walter Elkins until they finished college. Ann is also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Sue Chumbley; her aunt and uncle, Hazel Chumbley Elkins and Walter Elkins; and her sister-in-law, Ruby Chumbley; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Paul and Gertie Surface; her brother-in-law, Daniel C. Surface and cousin, Diane C. Doss.

She graduated from Radford College in 1956 with a degree in physical education. She started her career in 1956. She taught girls physical education at Bassett High School, behind-the-wheel driving at Dublin High School, and biology and science at Check High School. In 1960 she transferred to Blacksburg High School where she taught until 1990. At Blacksburg she taught girls physical education, behind-the-wheel driving, guidance counselor, reading class. She also coached girls basketball, outdoor track, and gymnastics. She sponsored varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders for 23 years, was the Junior Class Sponsor. The “Pow-Wow”, the Blacksburg High School Yearbook, was dedicated to her twice.

She received The Kipps Award, an award established in honor of Mae and Florence Kipps for their dedication to the students of Blacksburg High School. Ann was a member and held several offices in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society of International. The society is an organization of Key Women Educators. She received the “Honoring Our Own” award. Ann was a member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association and Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association in which she held the office of Treasurer. After her retirement, Ann volunteered and coordinated the front desk volunteers at Montgomery Regional Hospital for 20 years. She was also a member of St. Michael Lutheran Church and served on the church council.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, David A. Surface of Blacksburg; brother, Bob Chumbley of Augusta, Ga.; sister, Jackie Worrell of Moneta, Va.; sisters-in-law, Sallie Surface of Murfreesboro, N.C.; cousins, Nancy Johnson and husband, Charles of Morton, Ill., David Chumbley and wife, Iris of Bluefield, W.Va., Richard Chumbley and wife, Faith of Draper, Va., Buddy Baker of Blue Ridge, Va.; nephews, Mark Worrell of Roanoke, Va., Eric Surface of Raleigh, N.C., Julianne Surface of Apex, N.C., and Brian Surface of Malone, NY. The family wishes to thank Pastor John Wertz, Rubye Scott, Jane and Scott Carr, Ann and Chuck Miller for their love and help during her extended illness. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the St. Michael Lutheran Church, 2308 Merrimac Road, Blacksburg, VA 24060.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 2016 in the St. Michael Lutheran Church with Pastor John Wertz officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
