Steven Murriel (Steve) Sumpter, 68, of Pearisburg, Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born at Pearisburg, Va., on August 16, 1942, the son of the late Wise M. and Bertha June Brown Sumpter. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Tannor Perdue. He was a loving husband, Dad and Poppa, loving brother and a special friend to many. He loved the Lord and attended the churches of the Staffordsville Charge. He served in the United States Army and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret A. Sumpter; two daughters and son-in-law, Lorrie Sumpter, of Pearisburg, and Tracey and Todd Perdue, of Crewe, Va.; granddaughter, Morgan Sumpter; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lena and Jerry Haymaker, of Gloucester, Va., and Sandi and Wade Condrey, of Pearisburg; special puppy dog, Toby; several nieces and nephews; aunt, Vivian Barnhart, of Roanoke; and uncles, Frank Brown and wife, Kathryn, and Bill Brown and wife, Martha both of Pearisburg. Funeral services will be held 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 2, 2010, at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home, White Gate with the Rev. Jack Jenkins and Charlie Henderson officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until service time at 7:30 p.m. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, September 3, 2010, at the Eaton’s Chapel Cemetery.
