Emily Cottingham Stuart died on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at her home in Blacksburg, Va., surrounded by family and friends. Born on November 2, 1920, she was the second child of William Thomas and Eula Newbern Cottingham of Douglas, Ga.

She graduated from Duke University with a degree in sociology, did master’s work in social work at UNC Chapel Hill and had a distinguished, life long career as director of YM and YWCAs.

A member of Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, she is survived by her husband, Bob; her two children, Rob (and Barbara) Stuart, of Blacksburg, Va., and Mary Stuart (Mike Weinrich), of Baltimore, Md.; and her three grandchildren, Andrew, Elisa and Jesse Austell. Her brother, Tom Cottingham and his wife, Farrar, of Douglas, Ga.; their two daughters and four sons, mourn her loss as well.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church. Emily requested a garden of one’s own be planted in lieu of flowers, or that contributions in her name be made to the YMCA at Virginia Tech, 1000 N. Main St., Blacksburg, VA 24060.

The family wishes to extend their thanks for her care to Maureen, Ginger, Catrina, Robyn, Kathy, Barbara, Su, Maitra and Karen; Good Samaritan Hospice; Home Instead Senior Care and Dr. Bill Hendricks.
