Struyk, Shirley Peterson
It is with more sadness than we have ever imagined that our family announce the passing of Shirley Struyk. She was the kindest person, an amazing mom, and a beloved grandmother. And wife. Our hearts will never be the same with her passing. As her daughter it is impossible for me to have loved her any more. She was the moon and the stars to me. The only person who always believed in me and loved me truly unconditionally. Just as she did her grandchildren. She was the most excellent role model, beloved by all who met her. If I could only be half as wonderful as her. We love you to the moon and back plus some. My greatest friend, champion and bright star. We will love you forever mommy.
Shirley attended Washington High School in Sioux Falls, SD, and later Augustana College also in South Dakota. In addition to being a mother, wife, and homemaker, Shirley was a librarian, bookmobile driver, motel co-owner, church secretary, and director of a pregnancy care center. The job that gave her the greatest joy was being the Director of Volunteers for the USO in St. Louis, Missouri.
Shirley is survived by her husband of more than 60 years, Denny Struyk, her sister Judy Nelson, and only daughter Linda Struyk Millsaps. Also her granddaughters Caroline Terese Millsaps, Heather Nicole Millsaps, great grandson Easton Moore and son-in-law George E. Millsaps. And a host of dear friends across the country. She was preceded in death by her parents Helen and Clinton Peterson, her sister Gail Chambers, and a still-born daughter named Crystal.
Mom loved animals so much, of all kinds but especially those who can’t give back (like squirrels). So, in lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Floyd County Humane Society. They take the best care of some of nature’s little creatures. You can donate through their website https://www.floydhumanesociety.org.
We will let you know our arrangements soon. Love all you who loved mom.
