Stowers, Vernon Lee

Vernon Lee Stowers, 79, of Bland, VA passed away Monday, March 20, 2017 at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center.

He was born June 4, 1937 in Bland Co, the son of the late Glover Wise & Nellie Ann Stowers. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a guard for Goochland Correctional Center and later retired after 38 years as a supervisor with VDOT. He enjoyed tinkering with anything mechanical and sitting on the porch. He especially loved to mow. Known as “Papaw Doc” by his grandbabies, they always knew they could count on him to blow their mac&cheese.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Curtis Stowers.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 24 years, Mary King Stowers; his step-sons & daughters-in-law, Chad & Jennifer Morehead and Stuart & Lekisha Morehead; his daughters & sons-in-law, Cathy & Wendell Parker, Debbie & Gary Looney and Cheryl & Karl Pennington; 3 grandchildren, Cailyn and Kiel Parker and James Williams; 4 step-grandchildren, Shianne and Thad Morehead, Billy and Summer Carter; his special dog, “Jake”; and his special friends, Johnny Meadows, Robbie Pike and Ed Wimmer.

Funeral services are planned for Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with Rev. Bobby Lorton officiating. Burial will follow in Hoges Chapel Cemetery. The family will receiver friends Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at the funeral home from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
