Stoevener, Herbert Horst

Herbert Horst Stöevener, 75, of Blacksburg, Va., passed away on Monday, May 10, 2010, at his home. Herbert was born in Bad Grund, Germany on May 14, 1934, to the late Curt Stövener and Henny Stövener. He first came to this country as a Grange Service Exchange Student. After completing high school in Germany he returned to study at Cornell University, where he met and married Sylva Espenscheid Stöevener. He obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois after which he began his professional career at Oregon State University. In 1980 he accepted a position at Virginia Tech as Department Head of Agriculture and Applied Economics. He retired from the University as a Special Assistant to the Provost for International Programs. His professional interests involved international programs and he was a respected administrator but his true passion was teaching. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylva Espenscheid Stöevener, and survived by his son, Ralph Gregory Stöevener, of Platteville, Colo.; his daughter, Karen Annette Stöevener, of Blacksburg, Va.; his sister, Leni Alt, of Goslar, Germany; three granddaughters, Cassie Anne Stöevener, Morgan Leigh Stöevener, Kersten Leni Stöevener; and one greatgrandchild, Ryan L. Stöevener-Lucas. He is a member of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church and a life member of Virginia Partners of the Americas. A Memorial Service will be held 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, 2010, at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in the sanctuary with the Rev. Gary Schroeder officiating. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Herbert and Sylva Stöevener Endowed Scholarship Fund.
