stewart_jr_jeffrey_robertDr. Jeffrey Robert Stewart Jr., of Blacksburg, Virginia, died in his home Friday morning after battling a long-term illness. Jeff was born on September 18, 1932 in Washington D.C. to the late Jeffrey Stewart Sr. and the late Frances Spicer Stewart. Stewart received his B.S. degree in business education from Virginia Tech in 1953. He then served for three years as a United States Air Force jet fighter pilot. Following his military service, he earned his M.S. degree in business education from Virginia Tech and his Educational Doctoral Degree in business education from New York University. He served as a member of the faculty at Virginia Tech for 35 years. He retired with the rank of Professor Emeritus in the spring of 1992. Dr. Stewart authored more than 50 business texts which were used as teaching tools at Blacksburg High School and throughout the United States and in many other countries. Dr. Stewart was also an upstanding member of the community. He served on the Montgomery County School Board, the Blacksburg Planning Commission, and the board of directors of National Bankshares Inc. He was also an active member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer and bridge player. He enjoyed traveling. He enjoyed photography, poetry and humor as well. He worked hard to help others and he enjoyed what life had to offer. Jeff is survived by his long-term companion, Janet Swiger; his daughter, Linda Stewart Scimeca and her husband, Craig Scimeca of Reston; his son, Douglas Stewart of Fredericksburg; his daughter, Charlotte Stewart Chess and her husband, Taylor Chess of Fairfax; his daughter, Caroline Stewart Mullins and her husband Mickey D. Mullins of Blacksburg; his eleven grandchildren, Ryan Scimeca, Jonathan Scimeca, Coleman Stewart, Greer Stewart, Clayton Stewart, Connor Chess, Catie Chess, Phoebe Chess, Bennett Chess, Michael Douglas Mullins, and Samantha Mullins; his sister-in-law, Annie Stewart Wagner of Huntsville, Alabama; his nephew, Robert Stewart and his wife and children of Atlanta; and his niece, Carol Stewart Stranc of San Francisco. Memorial services will be conducted Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 1 p.m. in the Blacksburg United Methodist Church with the Rev, Reggie Tuck officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Jeffrey Stewart, Jr. to the Department of Teaching and Learning within the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech, 902 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg, VA 24061. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive SW, Blacksburg.
