Betty Schenk Stewart, died Sunday, August 20, 2006. She was born in Bedford, Va. on October 20, 1925, a daughter of Rosa Lewis Schenk and George Winston Schenk.

She received an associate degree in merchandising from the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary, and worked as a personnel manager for department stores in Washington, D.C. and Memphis, Tenn.

She was a member of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church in Christiansburg and a past president of the Auxiliary of the Virginia Optometric Association. She also served as the national chairman of Volunteers for Vision, an organization that, under the auspices of the American Optometric Association, provided visual screening for pre-school children. She was an active member of the parents’ advisory council of Southwestern Virginia Training Center in Hillsville, Va.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Henry Warner Stewart, an optometrist in Christiansburg for 40 years. She is survived by her son, H. Warner Stewart III of Hillsville; her daughter, Susan Stewart Smith; her son-in-law, J. Michael Smith; two granddaughters, Anne Taylor Smith and Sarah Winston Smith, all of Larchmont, N.Y.; and a sister, Mrs. Howard A. Curle of Richmond, Va.

The funeral will be Thursday, August 24, 2006 at 1 p.m. at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Christiansburg, with burial at Sunset Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Eldercare Program at Southwestern Virginia Training Center, P.O.
