Stacy, Harold Henry

Harold Henry Stacy, or Stacy as he was affectionately known, 81, of Longs, S.C., and Blacksburg, Va., joined his Heavenly Father on Friday, September 12, 2008, after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Stacy was born September 23, 1926, in War, W.Va., to the late Princess and Luther Stacy. He was reared by his grandparents, David Jess and Theresa Stacy. He spent most of his life in the Blacksburg area where his grandfather pastored a church.

He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corp during World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a loving husband and father, an avid golfer, member of the Blacksburg Lions and charter member of the Blacksburg Country Club.

Stacy began his career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1945 in Blacksburg, Va., working his way up from rural route carrier to assistant postmaster. He was transferred in 1966 to postal headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he retired in 1980. He enjoyed an active retirement in Apopka, Fla., before moving to Longs, S.C., to be near the loving arms of family in 2006.

Survivors include his high school sweetheart, best friend and loving wife of 62 years, Phoebe Ballengee Stacy. His two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Patty Stacy and David and Lisa Stacy, all of Little River, S.C., will miss him dearly. Grandchildren, Jennifer Remeta and husband, Nick, of Greer, S.C., Melanie Stacy, of Conway, S.C., and James and Bryant Stacy, of Little River, S.C., hold fond loving memories of their Pop Pop. Great-grandsons, Alex (2) and Stephen (7 months) Remeta will miss his hugs; in addition, Phoebe’s siblings who he loved dearly, each one being so much a part of his life, Peggy B. Duncan, Richard and JoAnn Ballengee, Charles and Nancy Ballengee and Carolyn S. Sult, all of Christiansburg, Va., and Bonnie P. and Jim Crock, of Longs, SC. Also surviving is half sister and brother-in-law, June and Clarence Bragg, of Shady Springs, W.Va.

The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff at the memory care unit at Summit Place in Little River, S.C., as well as the very special care given by the staff of Regency Hospice for their compassion, interest and understanding during Stacy’s long battle with the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease.

The family will receive visitors and friends at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive in Blacksburg from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2008. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, September 15, 2008, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with interment following in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
