Mary Patteson Stables, 89, formerly of Narrows, Va., passed peacefully in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 25, 2010, at The Winters’ home in Virginia Beach, Va., where she had resided for the past six years. She was surrounded by love with her daughter, Judy; her son-inlaw, Mark; her granddaughter, Madison; and Gretel, their dog. She was born in Tazewell, Va., on February 11, 1921, and was the daughter of the late Robert Watkins and Pearl Ann Jackson Patteson. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Okieffee Stables; a son, Stephen Newberry; two brothers, Robert Patteson and Harold Patteson; and five sisters, Elizabeth Gibson, Carrie Simmons, Glenna Hoge, Georgie Patteson and Willie Patteson. A 1938 graduate of Lebanon High School and a graduate of Jefferson LPN Nursing School in Roanoke, she attended Kathleen Memorial United Methodist Church on Wolf Creek. She is survived by her children, Robert Newberry and wife, Judy, of Bland, and Judy Winters and husband, Mark, of Virginia Beach; her stepchildren, Deborah Edmonson and husband, Ron, of Charlotte, N.C., Donna Oney, of Narrows, Margo Thompson and husband, Earl, of Dublin, Va., and James Stables Jr. and wife, Jo, of Clemmons, N.C.; several grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many special friends. A Graveside Service will be conducted 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at the Patteson Cemetery in the Wolf Creek Community near Narrows with the Rev. Amy Patteson Holtz officiating. A private family visitation will be held in the chapel of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows on Saturday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. The family requests that those sending memorial contributions, please consider the W.A.
