Spence Jr., Arthur Dallas
Drafted into the Marines while still in high school, he served his country during World War II, and was on Iwo Jima when the flag was raised signifying victory. A carpenter by trade he worked for Martin Brother Construction Company and later in the carpenter shop at Hercules, retiring after 33 years in 1989. He was a devout member of Willis United Methodist Church serving as an usher and deacon for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Dallas Spence Sr. and Carrie Maye Martin Spence; brother, Arlie Kenneth Spence; and sister, Katie Spence McCaughey. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Myriam Virginia Newman Spence; sons, Arthur D. Spence III and wife, Marie, James D. (Jimmy) Spence and wife, Janie, and Michael G. (Mike) Spence; daughter, Katie Spence Vest and husband, James; grandchildren, James Brian (Jimmy) Vest and wife, Greta, Michelle England and husband, Keith, Melissa Cox and husband, Greg, Gretchen Gleim and husband, Tommy, and Neeley Russell and husband, Philip; seven greatgrandchildren; one greatgreat-grandchild; sister-inlaw, Madeline Spence Bayne; brother-in-law, Mac McCaughey; four nieces; one nephew; and his cat, Calico. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Willis United Methodist Church, Treasurer Neil Bolt, 681 Burks Fork Road, SW, Willis, Va. 24380. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, February 12, 2010, at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Josh Kilbourne officiating. Interment to follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
