John Paul Spence, of Floyd, departed this life on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at age 90. He was preceded in death by his parents C. Wilkerson Spence and Alice Moles Spence; sisters & brothers, Filas Spence, Howard Spence, Euell Spence, Claude Spence, Silas Spence, Larmie Mitchell, Reva Huff, Hattie Woods, Cova Quesenberry, Virginia Williams and son Gary Paul Spence.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Zelma Thompson Spence, sons & daughter-in-law; Dwight D. Spence, Robert W. & Melissa W. Spence; daughters & sons-in-law; Velva S. & Garry Lineback, Reva Kay & Bobby Pack, sister & brother-in-law; Lois S. & Delmer Alderman, grandchildren; Joshua Spence, Isaac Spence, Jeremiah Spence, Stevie Bowman, Jennifer Lineback, Amanda Bertelsen, Jake Altizer, Jonathan Spence, great-grandchildren; Kiley Bowman, Chloe Spence ,Corben Spence, Natalee Spence and Thomas Bowman.

John served in the Army during WWII from 1943 until 1945 were he received the Purple Heart. Corporal Spence then served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946 until 1949.

Graveside Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at the Spence Cemetery, Dugspur, VA with Pastor Emory Tarpley officiating. Military Rites by Grover King Post 1115. Family will receive friends at Maberry Funeral Home from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.
