Spangler, Sr., John Douglas

John Douglas Spangler Sr., age 80, passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. Born November 1, 1943, in Wikel, WV, he was the son of the late Clyde T. and Mary Riner Spangler.

John had a tremendous work ethic, always striving to be the best at whatever the task. He spent many years providing for his family through his dedicated work at Celanese in Narrows, VA, before transitioning to a second chapter of life, farming popcorn alongside his son—sharing not only the labor but also the bond of family and tradition. His hands were strong, but his spirit was gentle, always guided by his deep faith as a lifelong member of Lindside United Methodist Church. His faith and his family were the two most important things in his life, and this was evident to all who knew him.

His infectious optimism and smile were uplifting to everyone he interacted with. Whether he was sharing stories, leading prayer, or simply being present, he lifted the spirits of those around him. As a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, he showed the power of love and dedication through every phase of life. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and an enduring example of what it means to truly be a good and faithful servant of the Lord.

Additionally, John was an original and founding member of the Lindside Volunteer Fire Department having served for 50 years. He helped coach the Little League team in Lindside and enjoyed woodworking. He also had a passion for gardening and took great joy in giving away items he’d grown with others.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 59 years, Betty Sue Spangler; and sisters, Esther Ford, Margaret Morris, Alice Crawford, and Cora Spangler.

Those left to cherish his memory include one son, John D. Spangler, Jr. of Lindside, WV; one daughter, Melissa Asbury and husband Anthony of Ballard, WV; one brother, P.T. Spangler of Bluefield, WV; four grandchildren, Allie Bodnar (Zane), J.D. Spangler III (Alex), Chris Spangler (Kayla), and Michelle Toler (Nate); and three great grandchildren, Cooper Bodnar, Carter Bodnar, and Phoenix Toler.
