Elizabeth (Irene) Spangler, 88, of Floyd, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 5, 2010. She was born on April 26, 1922, a daughter of the late General Washington Boyd and Eula Mae (Radford) Boyd.
She was a member of Floyd Baptist Church for over 50 years. Irene was owner and operator of Tuggles Gap Restaurant and Motel along with her husband, George C. Spangler, Sr., for 31 years. She enjoyed volunteering for Angels in the Attic in Floyd and the local American Red Cross. She will be remembered for her love of family, her welcoming smile, and compassionate spirit. She brought sunshine to every life she touched.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George C. Spangler, Sr.; seven sisters, Leila Hatcher, Ocie Weddle, Sylvia Hatcher, Goldie Nolen, Francis Evelyne Boyd, Ruby Pauline “Polly” Brockwell, and Rose Ellen “Tempsey” Mitchell; and one brother, John “Wilson” Boyd.
She is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Lucy Jane Harris and Junior Harris, Floyd; two sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin B. and Janet Eanes, Floyd; G.C. Jr. and Rhonda Spangler, Floyd; three grandchildren, Junior Eanes, Check; Debbie Eanes Olmo and her husband, Richie Olmo, Check; Ashley Spangler, Roanoke; one great granddaughter, Mykayla Eanes, Check. She is also survived by many special cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Womack officiating. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery. Friends may call at Gardner Funeral Home on Tuesday after 1 p.m. where the family will be from 5 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Irene’s memory may be made to the Floyd County Rescue Squad or your favorite charity.
