Madeline S. Sheppard, 89, of McCoy, Va., died on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born in Goodwins Ferry, Va., on February 20, 1920, to the late Elbert Thompson and Cora Bell Smith Sheppard. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Harry Burgis Sheppard; her daughter, Ann Hoback Ratcliff; an infant son, Jerry Burgis Sheppard; a son-in-law, Dickie Stanger; and a daughter-in-law, Esther Woods Sheppard. Madeline was a member of the Sunnyside Pentecostal Holiness Church. She is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley S. and Brent Whitaker, of McCoy, Peggy S. and Edward Matusevich, of Blacksburg, and Gladys Delaine Stanger, of Christiansburg; four sons and daughters-in-law, H. Donald and Patsy Sheppard, of Blacksburg, Dale and Florence Sheppard, of Salem, Larry Sheppard, of Luray, Va., and Wayne Sheppard, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Oak and Joyce Sheppard, of McCoy; a special sister-in-law, Shirley C. Sheppard, of Longshop; and numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and great-greatgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2009in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Retired Pastor Leslie Shelton and Pastor Steve Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. Flowers would be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the LongshopMcCoy Fire and First Aid, P.O. The family wishes to give a special thanks to Dr. Scott Jamison and his staff and also her special caregivers, Cinda McCoy and Myrtle Price, for all their loving care during Madeline’s illness. Friends may call anytime after noon on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, S.W., Blacksburg, Va.
