Sowers, Myrtle

March 31, 1919 – April 13, 2009 Myrtle Sowers, 90, passed peacefully at Sunrise Senior Living in Columbia, Maryland. A native of Montgomery County Virginia, Mrs. Sowers was a loyal friend and active member of many civic organizations in the Blacksburg/Christiansburg community. She belonged to the Blacksburg Women’s Club, the Ladies Home Demonstration Club and St. Paul Methodist Church among others. She was an avid gardener and excellent cook and baker, delighting friends and family.

Widow of Major Henry (Ike) Sowers, she is survived by her son and his wife, William and Starr Sowers, of Columbia, Maryland. Grandchildren include Susan Hypes (Bristow, Virginia), Richard Hypes (Christiansburg), Lisa Sowers (Silver Spring, Md.), David Sowers (New York, N.Y.), and Stephen Sowers (Amherst, Mass.); and numerous great-grandchildren.

Family will receive visitors at Horne Funeral Home, from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 14, 2009. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul Methodist Church at 10 a.m. on April 15, 2009.
