Loving husband and father, Walter J. (Apple Pie) Smith, 84, of Rich Creek, Va., passed away Monday, June 30, 2008, at his home.

He was born June 11, 1924, to the late Walter W. and Vida L. Fisher Smith in Ripplemead, Va. Mr. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church, Rich Creek, Va. He was also a member of the Rich Creek Lions Club for 30 years. He was a World War II United States Army Veteran and was a fork truck driver for Celanese Corporation.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Agnes Smith; one brother, Lawrence “Hank” Smith; two sisters, Frances and Evelyn; and a great-granddaughter, Gracie Lynn.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Lillian Beatrice Dent Smith; four sons, Garrett Dale Smith and wife, Brenda, David Smith, Michael Smith and wife, Teresa, all of Rich Creek, Va., and Walter E. “Bunny” Smith, of Wirtz, Va.; a half sister, Nancy Kay Wells, of Roanoke, Va.; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey, Carla, April, Chris, Kevin, Kenneth, Melissa and Travis; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at the First Baptist Church, Rich Creek, Va., with the Rev. Jim Pickett officiating. Burial will follow with Military Rites at the Sunrise Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Rich Creek, Va.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown, W.Va., and at the church one hour prior to the services. Men of the church and Lions Club members will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
