Thelma Surface Smith, 87, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center. She was born in Montgomery County, Va. on July 13, 1919 to the late Robert and Margaret Fisher Surface. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ira W. Smith, Sr.

Mrs. Smith was a charter member of the Mountain Mission Church. She loved to fish in the New River, working with her flowers, as well as doing needle work for which she had won several blue ribbons.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and J.R. Price, Christiansburg; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ira W. Jr. and Joan Smith, Blacksburg, Earl G. and Gloria Smith, Blacksburg, Douglas L. and Ozina Smith, Radford, Paul Carson and Kim Smith, Blacksburg; three sisters-in-law, Catherine Surface, Blacksburg, Lois Horne, Hilliard, Ohio, Myrtle Orange Smith, Blacksburg; a brother-in-law, Dempsey Smith, Blacksburg; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. K.M. Sowinski and the staff at Heritage Hall Health Care Center, especially Lisa, for their loving care.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 9, 2006 at 1 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ira W. Smith, Jr. and the Rev. Orville Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. Friends may call anytime Friday, and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg.
