Sherman Ellis Smith, 77, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, July 11, 2009, at his home. He was born in McCoy, Va., on November 29, 1931, to the late Irvin and Ruby Albert Smith and was also preceded in death by his wife, Goldie Reed Smith; and a brother, Lawrence Smith.

Sherman established Blacksburg Auto Parts in Blacksburg in 1960, and has been active there since. He was a veteran of the United States Army and he enjoyed farming, gardening, fishing, and hunting with his friends his entire life.

He is survived by his three sons and daughter-in-law, David I. Smith, of Palm Spring, Calif., Samuel E. Smith, and W. Sidney, and Lisa Smith, both of Blacksburg; two sisters and brother-in-law, Joyce S. and Bill Davies, of Blacksburg, Emma C. Long, of Salem; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Stanley L. Sr., and Faye Smith, of McCoy, James C. and Nancy Smith, of Radford; four sisters-in-law, Nancy V. Smith, of Christiansburg, Mildred Kovach, of Newburgh, N.Y., Louise Reed, of Dry Branch, Martha Reed, of Belsprings; special friend and companion, Ruth M. McCoy; special friend, Russell Lugar; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like give a special thanks to his care givers, Cinda McCoy and Gail Price, Dr. Michael Payne and Dr. Phillip Shiner and their nurses and staff and the Carilion Home Health and Hospice.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the Centennial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with the Rev. Stanley “Shake” Smith Jr., the Rev. Gary McCoy, the Rev. Zeke Zanatos officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg.
